Powerful Female Characters in Ancient Theater



Ancient Athens constitues the birthplace of theater in Western world. The first theater structures, built in ancient Athens, were originally consisted of wooden seats on the slopes of hills. Later, they used marble or stones for their construction and raised stages. Athens is the place where the first plays took place, where the first masks and costumes were created, where the first actors were born and evolved.
The aim of this program is to dive into the history of the Ancient Greek Theater and to introduce the powerful role of women in theater.

Short duration program: 3 days – 3h/day.
Long duration program : 4 weeks – 3h/week.
During this program, the visitor has the opportunity to learn about the institutions, the notion of Democracy and the daily life of Ancient Classical Athens.
After reviewing some of the most well-known ancient tragedies and comedies, the participants are expexted to broaden their knowledge in the Ancient Theater, the ancient Athens and the role that men and women had in the ancient society of Athens.
In addition, they will have the chance to experience a different aspect of the city of Athens, through our tours around the modern Athenian theaters and artistic cafés and bars as well as to get in contact with theater professionals.
For ancient Greeks, the theater wasn’t just a way of entertainment. It was related to the education of people and to their spiritual cultivation. It was not only a representation of the society, of the values and the ideals of the citizens, but also, it was a way to express radical and innovative ideas, such as the egality between men and women or human rights. In most of the cases, theater constitued the only possible source of education for common people. Overall, theater was a life experience for ancient Greeks.
Dionysus was a mysterious and dark character in the Greek pantheon. He is the god of contrasts, revealing the real character of humans. He is the god of the harvest, festivity and pleasure.
Through this activity, we will find out the mysterious and full of surprises world of the ancient Greek theater. We will explore some of the most popular plays of the three prominent playwrights, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes, and we will have a unique experience through the participation in the ancient Greek theater.
