Model of Ancient Athenian Democracy

Young people and students from all over the world are invited to participate in a Model of the Ancient Athenian Democracy. They will learn the mechanisms and procedures of the state which gave birth to Democracy. They will participate in elections, they will be candidates to become members of the Boule (parliament) or the Archons (government). Finally, they will vote for or against law proposals concerning current issues (e.g. environmental, political, cultural).
On-line
4 days – 3h/day.
All participants are supposed to be citizens of the Athenian democratic state. They will elect the government, they will be elected as members of the parliament and they will vote for or against the suggested law proposals on contemporary political, environmental or cultural issues.
All modern democratic states use the representative system. People participate in elections every 4 years or so. Then, the elected bodies, the parliaments, have the power to decide on the legislation of the state. People rarely have the power to decide about the laws through referenda. So, people’s participation is restricted to the vote of their representatives. Most of whom are reelected again and again, as if they are professional politicians. However young people reject politics because they consider their participation pointless.
The aim of this activity is to show the function of direct participatory democracy. People vote the laws after discussion. The representatives only make detailed proposals to the general assembly. Young people should be aware of the rules of enhanced participation in the political process. Finally, they should decide to participate dynamically in political process if they want to live in a better world.
